Artist's Description

The Ernest Hemingway House in Key West, Florida is home to 52 cats, all descended from a cat owned by Hemingway named Snow White. Snow White was a polydactyl cat with one extra toe on each front paw. They are considered lucky by sailors.

The mutation which causes the extra toes is recessive, but due to selective breeding, over half of the cats at the Hemingway home have extra toes.
