I'm not surprised to learn that Occupy KC selected this site to add their voices to the “Occupy” movement spawned by recent Wall Street protests. 300 people gathered in Penn Valley Park on Sunday, October 9, 2011.
This temporary 65' tall monument will sit in Kansas City's Memorial Park for four weeks in the early fall of 2011. The wall was created from 105 cargo containers. When we looked at it with the naked eye, we could see that it meant "something," but could not figure out what.
When I looked at it through my camera, the view changed just enough that is was clear that one side of the sculpture says "IOU" and the other side says "USA." I shared the image with other people who had stopped and were trying to figure out what they were seeing.
This sculpture was created by sculptor John Salvest as a project for Grand Arts. IOU/USA is his largest project to date and took two weeks and a crew of five men to install. It is placed in a park opposite the building which houses the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

What an impressive work of art with a timely message (then and more so now)! Thanks for capturing both sides of the monument and showing it here. Maybe if they could place this on the National Mall permanently, folks might start thinking about it. Then again, 2,772 views and I am the first to like it - do they have a debtor prison for countries?
