This ice windrow formed near the south shore of the Straits of Mackinac in the winter of 2010. The piles of ice are up to about 15' high.
The bridge in the background is the 5 mile long Mackinac Bridge - the longest suspension bridge in the Americas. It links Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula.
This photograph was taken on February 6, 2010 using a Canon PowerSho SX20 IS with f/4, 1/1250 second and ISO-80.
Keith Stokes usually has a camera in his hand - photographing Mackinaw City & Mackinac Island in northern Michigan for MightyMac.org, Kansas & Kansas City for KansasTravel.org and science fiction conventions for MidAmericon.org. His photos appear regularly in Locus Magazine, the Food Channel Magazine and other publications and books. His photograph of Pillsbury Crossing was the cover of a recent K-Stater Magazine.

No, it was piled up by the wind. When I was growing up, one year there were fairly long caves in this ice.
Charles Robinson
Very interesting. I did not realize that there would be that much ice in the Straits. Would the windrow of ice have been created by a ship plowing through the ice?
