Artist's Description
The new Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River was completed in December of 2012, replacing a 1938 truss bridge which had the same name. The 2,500 foot four-lane, tied arch structure crosses the river near downtown Atchison, Kansas, where Amelia Earhart was born.
The second bridge in the foreground is the oldest railroad bridge over the Missouri River, the 1875 Atchison Railroad Bridge. The truss swing bridge was originally built as a toll bridge which accommodated, trains, wagons, pedestrians and later vehicle traffic.
